Grant - Wanted: "A Man on Horseback" - By Elmo Scott Watson
The Pentwater News, Jul 11, 1930 (only 1 July issue)
An article on my "favorite" American deserves inclusion - not only for his decisive victory at Vicksburg - surrendered on 4 July 1863 and "fairly won" after he conducted one of, if not the, most masterfully conceived and executed campaigns in American military history.  Grant's employment of an intricate and aggresive scheme of manuever using multiple corps, and without a fixed base or line of logistics and supply, all behind "enemy" lines,"  required immense moral courage and fortitude and faith in his men - not only in the face of the enemy but also from critics and doubters behind his back - including his superior, President Abraham Lincoln, and his own loyal, hard-fighting subordinate WT Sherman.
For his contributions to the saving of the Union - no small debt of gratitude is owed this humble leader.
