The Best From American Heritage in the Spokane Daily Chronicle 1959 - 68

The following listing represents an attempt to share the efforts of the old fourth estate in it's heyday, as it sought to provide an historical perspective on a consistent basis.  In partnership with the renowned American Heritage Magazine, newspapers, such as the Spokane Daily Chronicle, The Eugene Register Guard Sunday, St Petersburg Times Sunday, and the Toledo Blade Sunday Magazine, shared with their readers these fascinating glimpses of our diverse past.  The Spokane Daily Chronicle on Google News Archives (GNA) offers the most consistently accessible, compact and readable versions of these articles. I have truly grown fond of that newspaper as it covered international, national, local and sports news on a uniformly outstanding basis...to make those citizens proud...at least from what I see (and the women of that area and era were easy on the eyes! - especially a gal named Mikki).  Why they discontinued the "Best From" articles in October 1968 is undecipherable to me..perhaps American Heritage decided to "pull the plug" after a near ten-year run; or maybe the turbulent "drop-in," "drop-out," anti-establishment times stirred historical doubts or disinterest, or perhaps, a seemingly recent glut of too many "NYC-centric" history articles in 1968, "turned-off" the proud "Inland Empire" readership and SDC ownership. I have found no other available GNA newspapers that carried the series longer than the SDC did. It is fortunate that the serial exists to enjoy and educate. Hopefully, for the foreseeable future, SDC will not to be pulled from GNA - as has been the case with with many other key newspaper offerings recently - seeking a buck at the expense of free and open research and larger readership.

Meanwhile, here is a compiled listing of articles by title, from 1959-1968. Now, I found the titles sometimes esoteric if not confusing - so, under "Info", I provided  each entry with my own reference terms, dates, locations, names, events etc. as searchable keywords (please excuse any typos!). As you can see below, the article date is to the right of Info.   Assuming you know how to use GNA just go to SDC and enter the date desired e.g. Jan 3 1959..and your off and running... you will have to scroll or eyeball the article and page - usually the article is on the bottom half of a page - say between pages 14-18 of a standard 22-32 page issue - or try typing in a guesstimate page number in the upper right..say 15..and scroll from there to save time...

If you are not familiar with GNA, you might start by clicking the Advertisement on Dec 31, 1958, p. 29; then afterwards click on "Browse this Newspaper" then sort by day. The articles appeared most every Saturday starting with January 3, 1959 (some are to be found under Friday links as indicated under my Info). There are "no editions available" for Sunday, so your eyes will easily focus on the Saturday edition followed by a blank.
