Selected links to Historical Articles by ES Watson and JD Sherman - 1921-1945

Elmo Scott Watson and John Dickinson Sherman were the preeminent syndicated historical journalists of their times.  The following represents a "personal selection" of links to historical articles appearing in the nation's newspapers from 1922-1944. As always on MMHRI - it is a work in progress.

Elmo Scott Watson (1892–May 6, 1951) "was an American journalist and college professor..."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elmo_Scott_Watson

and

John Dickinson Sherman (1859-1926)  "was for thirty plus years a "veteran Chicago newspaper man" and "...city editor of THE TRIBUNE from 1889-1896, and Editor of the Chicago Inter-Ocean from 1898-1914

______________________________________________________________________________

Note -

This is an ongoing personal project  - an accumulation of links to articles by the above authors, principally Elmo Scott Watson, that are of interest to this blogger. The project is perhaps 95% complete as of 28 May 11 - Memorial Day. This is a fitting date, one which ESW so often observed with his special brand of insightful and sometimes moving articles on for example the Unknown Soldier and similar themes.

Nevertheless, there is no claim to this being an exhaustive list of their writings - both were just too prolific and sadly, some key newspapers, issues and dates are missing from the available data base to ever enable such a claim. Still, I continue to look for more surprises...yesterday for example I found a half dozen more articles of personal interest and inserted them in the chronology.

Caution - The links are provided to take you directly to the article itself, or as close to it as possible given the randomness of the scan process of the page. Once "in the newspaper" you will then have to "zoom out" to locate, to the right or left, the article and obtain a readable view.  Also, some minor edits have been made to the retrieved text which accompanied the links of those articles initially found through keyword search i.e. "Elmo Scott Watson"...thereby, no claim of grammatical correctness is made!

Now, as undoubtedly may occur,  if  a link doesn't work and an obvious fix can't be made (usually it is deleting the fragment "amp;" which creeps into a copy/paste of the link - but not always) then go to the source:

http://news.google.com/newspapers

and find the article yourself by selecting the given newspaper name and date and then scrolling through pages on your own...happy hunting!

_______________________________________________________________________________

Note - Writing well before 1921, and consistently up to his death in 1926, John Dickinson Sherman set the standard for "full feature" topical and historical articles in a style later supplemented and then continued by Elmo Scott Watson.

For example see the 1919 article:

78 Congressional Medals of Honor to A.E.F. - By John Dickinson Sherman
The Woodville Republican - Sep 27, 1919 (better copy)
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=NhYlAAAAIBAJ&sjid=vxIGAAAAIBAJ&pg=1961%2C1259608

Indeed, Watson would inherit Sherman's legacy of producing quality and popular thematic articles; with perhaps a bit more emphasis on the historical. So, one begins with the year 1921 when Sherman was at the top of his game and when Watson, later in that year, would first achieve syndicated status with his "Great Stories of Scouts" and then "Great Stories of Indians" series of short vignettes.

Brady, Miranda J, “Stories of Great Indians” by Elmo Scott Watson: Syndication, Standardization, and the Noble Savage in Feature Writing " Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript presented at the annual meeting of the International Communication Association, Marriott, Chicago, IL, May 21, 2009

Abstract: This paper explores the career and work of journalist Elmo Scott Watson, describing the role of his syndicated feature stories in standardizing discourses about American Indian people in the popular press of the early twentieth century. Situating Watson’s work against the backdrop of professionalized news, I argue that it was not merely the emerging technologies which led to the reproduction of the noble and ignoble savage binary in the popular press, but the “internal logics” of such discursive formations which made them so easily reproduced. In addition, I suggest that while scholars have focused a great deal of attention on hard news stories and the ideal of objectivity, we can learn more by exploring the productivity of “entertaining” newspaper content such as Watson’s stories. Watson was an agent in reproducing the standards of his discipline, and looking to his work can tell us a great deal about the exigency of his field as journalism was becoming professionalized. I argue that while Watson’s stories were considered entertaining, he and others in his field believed such content served an important educational function; in particular, Watson believed he was correcting negative misconceptions about American Indian people through the noble savage identity construct.

This early and life-long interest in Native Americans would lead to the following "future" ESW authoritative articles still cited today - The Indian Wars and the Press, 1866-1867," Journalism Quarterly, December 1940;  "A Checklist of Indian War Correspondents, 1866-1891," Journalism Quarterly. Historical Highlights - A Famous Coon Story - Crockett- Martin Scott - By Elmo Scott Watson - The Pentwater News, May 30, 1941

(E.S. Watson incorrectly refers to a Fifth Rifle Regiment of the War of 1812 - there were only 4. Martin Scott was assigned to the 26th Infantry Regiment during the war and then the  post-war Rifle Regiment in 1818.  Scott transferred to the Fifth Infantry Regiment when the Rifle Regiment was disbanded in 1821.)

ESW's 'History in the News' - 'Camp Cavalcade' series begins
"Shadowy figures in a cavalcade of American history - such as the men behind the names of the great army cantonments scattered all over the United States, where young Americans are learning to be soldiers in order to defend their country when the need arises."
